AC GENERATOR

AC Generator
Same with other kinds of generator, AC generator also produces current with a sinusoidal output waveform. Dc generators produce direct current and Ac produce alternating current. The construction is almost the same with that of DC generator, the only difference is the absence of the commutator. Commutator in DC generator acts as a rectifier(Sinusoidal transforms into Direct current). Because of its absence in AC generator, the output is purely sinusoidal. One of the reason why there is an AC generator because AC(alternating current) can be used directly in the transformation of voltages and current. AC generators can be directly connected to a transformers, either increasing the voltage or decreasing.

AC generator are mainly used in high power generator ranges from few KVA(kilovolt-ampere) up to several MVA(megavolt-ampere). In many power plant, AC generators are used. The advantages of AC generators over DC generators is that, you can supply electricity in far place with just a minimal loss. Transmission is done by increasing the voltages in the sending end to minimize the wire losses by the use of transformers. AC generators a greatly used even in household since almost every appliance in our house uses an Alternating Current.
